Parish Church of St. Lawrence

Cesta prvih borcev 34, 8250 Brežice

In 1781, the town of Brežice was struck by heavy floods. The Sava River destroyed the cemetery and the foundations of the old parish church, which stood almost opposite the present church. The latter was built one year after the floods. The church catches your eye with its picturesque façade adorned with pilasters, niches, and a rosette above which the bell tower rises. Its interior is of special value as well and includes the altars with the paintings of St. Florian and St. Nicolas, as well as a painted presbytery made in 1966 by the excellent Slovenian artist Stane Kregar (1905–1973).

Frescoes by Tomaž Fantoni and Jakob Broll date back to 1861. In 1966, the interior was redesigned with stained glass windows and frescoes by Stane Kregar (1905–1973) in the presbytery. Its front face includes elements of classicism and is divided by pilasters, niches, rosette and a molding over which towers the belfry.

Its predecessor stood just the opposite of the present parish church and is mentioned already in the 12th century as a chapel-of-ease of the primitive parish of Videm, from which it was separated as a vicariate before 1354. It became an independent parish in the early 17th century.
