The former German House (Deutsches Heim) with the Black Eagle Hotel (Zum Schwarzen Adler) is a northern Renaissance-style building. In 1904, all residents of Brežice celebrated the opening, regardless of whether they thought of themselves as Slovenes or Germans − in the same year, the National and German Centres were opened. The “Slovenes of Brežice” gathered in the first one. In the early 20th century, the German Centre also housed a court (now the Brežice District Court), a post office, and a tax administration office. In the German House of the Südmarka organization different events took place until the end of World War I, like masquerades, balls, public festivities and concerts.
